Blackberry 8900 Field Test – Part 3OK, I spent a lot of BB time on our trip to St. Louis. This includes camera usage, GPS usage, looking up stuff, etc. According to I Love Blackberry, in the past week I have used my Blackberry 8900 339 times, for a total of 12 hours, 17 minutes, and 42 seconds. Wow that sounds like a lot!
Let’s see. I used Google Maps with the internal GPS, Facebook for Blackberry, Ubertwitter for Twittering, AIM for chatting, Mobipocket for ebook reading… Oh yeah, and somewhere in there I did use the actual phone!
Everything performed well, with the exception of the GPS. Using the GPS with Google Maps, it wasn’t always available. I used the method of going to the GPS application in “Settings”, and hitting “Refresh”, but that didn’t always work. I’m going to try to find a fix for this. I think it’s a result of AT&T wanting their own GPS used rather than a free one, but then again, it could very well be an application issue with the 8900 GPS. Even using the cell tower location, I was able to find what I needed. Most of the time you don’t need a location within inches! Those without a GPS, the Google Maps will find you based on cell tower location. Sneaky, sneaky!
I beat Josh to the punch on looking up phone numbers. He had the phone book, I had Google search (on my internet home page of course!) and was able to find the subject of choice and call very quickly.
Camera usage was really fun! One note, I had a 5X zoom on the 8300, this one does a 2X zoom. My wife’s pics were “zoomier”, so to speak. I’ll probably jack up my picture resolution, too. I have a 2gb card which provides plenty of room. Pics can be viewed on Facebook. Here’s one!
.
I’m also having a little trouble with the autofocus. There’s no “instant” pics with the 8900. It takes a few seconds to focus then snap. Irritating, but I guess I can live with it!
That’s about it for my Blackberry 8900 review. Unless something new comes up, you can find more info at Blackberry, or user websites like Crackberry.

St. Louis for the win!We took a trip up to St. Louis last week, visiting daughter and new grandson. The trip was really nice, just Brenda and myself, 12 hour drive up, and back. While we were there, Josh treated us, oh man did he… We visited the Arch, flew on the helicopter, went to the Magic House, and other stuff.
Eating… oh my. We ate at what was probably the best Mexican restaurant I have ever tried, outside of home cookin’ in Mexico; El Maguey. Another good place was the Spaghetti Warehouse. Excellent!
Best part, of course, was seeing and holding the new grandson, Luke. He’s 8 weeks old, gaining weight, and we’re pretty proud. Early baby, still in the hospital, but doing good!
